Nestled in a small community in the Metro West area outside
of Boston exists a gallery that has become known for displaying edgy works
of art by up and coming artists from across the nation. Medway, MA is
not a community known for its local art scene, despite the number of arts
organizations which make their homes in surrounding towns. Located smack in
the middle of Main Street, Visions Art Gallery is preparing for an exhibit
which may just put the town of Medway on the map. Gallery owners Canman and
Angela Cannistraro stated: “After years of showcasing work that
bridges the gap between Fine & Alternative Art; Visions Gallery is opening
the door to the aesthetic consciousness of the New England art scene by redefining
the parameters’ of its self imposed limits. We are excited about featuring
artists from all over the world who have added their own creative keys to
a show that will unlock and free the perceptions of all that view it.”
The upcoming exhibit, “(Nu)erotic… or, Why Does Love Make Us All
So Crazy?!” presents the work of 40 artists from the U.S., New Zealand,
Spain, Russia and Britain. Curator Theresa Wall Duggan, of Art and Discord,
developed the concept for the exhibit as a way to challenge common ideas about
eroticism that exist among artists and collectors alike. “I find that
exhibits which focus on erotic art have a tendency to be predictable and what
is predictable is inevitably boring. This really is the last thing you want
when viewing something which is supposed to be titillating and sexually expressive,”
Theresa explains, “I decided that what would be most fascinating is
putting love and sexuality in the context of neurosis, which is commonly a
method of dealing with emotional distress. Many people have experienced some
form of neurosis in their emotional lives. I have found that personally,
my most neurotic moments are related to sex and in dealings with the
opposite sex.”
